Abstract

This study aims to find the students’ comprehension on obligatory sentence patterns and the implementation of the patterns as the basis of analysis on given sentences. Specifically, the study is to find out what patterns and what forms and functions of parts of the sentences that are not mostly understood by the students. By using qualitative descriptive method of data analysis, there are found that sentence patterns containing complex transitive verbs and parts of sentences in forms of Prepositional phrases, -ing form phrases, semi-modal verb, participial phrase, infinitive phrase, and the functions of obligatory and optional adverbial phrases are still difficult to be understood by most of the students in the subject of English Sentence Patterns.
