Abstract

The point of this writing is the stereotype of China immigrant in America in the novel Beyond The Narrow Gate by Leslie Chang. This writing tells about the journey of Chinese woman immigrant who lived in China to gain America in 1950s. As an immigrant there, she had to face any situation that reflected her as a part of minority community in America. The majority community at that time was White Anglo Saxon Protestant or WASP who declared that they were the biggest one which had power not only in economics but also in politics. In another side, Mary Han had tried to make any WASP believed that she deserved to get the same rights as other individually. As a town, Hartford only had a small native Chinese when she came there, while the WASP were the most who regarded success to make commerce there. Assimilation was the best thing to change the stereotype of China immigrant there, and Mary Han succeeded to do that by doing many efforts. From this novel, Leslie Chang as the author, wants to explain there are many chances for men or women as immigrant in America to have the same rights as long as they know how to try to achieve what they have dreamed.
