Abstract
This study aims to analyze figurative language in song lyrics using theories in semantics. The theories in semantics are used to analyze the true meaning and figurative language used in Ed Sheeran album’s “Divide”. This research used a qualitative approach. It is conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The research object is Ed Sheeran album’s “Divide” (2017) song lyrics. The research data collected is from lyrics which are found in the album “Divide” (2017). The result of this research is the true meaning of every song lyric that is in the album, and the types of figurative language that are on the lyrics of the song in the album. The figurative language that I researched covers simile, metaphor, personification, metonymy, synecdoche, hyperbole, and litotes. There are 16 song lyrics that I researched and found 10 simile, 20 metaphor, 8 personification, 11 metonymy, 5 synecdoche, 9 hyperboles, and no litotes. In conclusion, the use of figurative language could effectively make song lyrics more understandable while also easy to listen to.
