Abstract

This study is about Politeness Strategies that are used by Natalie Glebova and Fred Abel in interview in Pageant magazine. Politeness Strategies is a strategies which it has important roles in social interaction or daily conversation, thus, it encourages the writer to conduct a study in this major. In her study, the writer tries to find out the Politeness Strategies used by Natalie Glebova and Fred Abel in the interview when they are conversing to each other and what are the effect toward Natalie and Fred if they don't use it. The writer chooses this interview because it provides examples of politeness strategies. In doing the data analysis, the writer uses the theory of Politeness Strategies as suggested by Brown and Levinson (1987) that are Positive Politeness and Negative Politeness. The approach used in this study is Qualitative-descriptive approach. The source of the data of this study is conversation between Natalie Glebova and Fred Abel that is taken from the script in interview that found in internet. After doing the analysis the writer found that Natalie Glebova and Fred Abel use of Politeness Strategies as suggested by Brown and Levinson. In addition, the writer found that in Positive Politeness is the strategy that is used by both of them but Natalie Glebova often uses this strategy. It shows that she is the one that tries harder to get Fred attention. Next, Negative Politeness is the second that is used by Natalie than Fred. It means that she is respect the distance between them.
