Abstract
This term paper discusses about the theme of a literary work of novel using the intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. Through the intrinsic approaches are applied concepts: stream of consciousness, plot and setting. Through the extrinsic approach is Cultural Trauma by Jeffrey Alexander and Ron Eyerman. This study is the variety of qualitative research, types of library research, interpretative analysis using the method of data collection in the form of literary texts from the novel Washington Black by Esi Edugyan. Stage as a primary source and supported by some of the literatures to relate the theory, concept and the relevant definition as a secondary source.
