Abstract

This Term Paper entitled “English Slang Abbreviations in American Artist’s Twitter” discusses slang abbreviations that are often used by American Artists on Twitter. The purpose of this research are to find the type, forms, and meanings of English Slang Abbreviations used by artists’ on Twitter. I use a descriptive method for research. Meanwhile, sociolinguistics is applied as the frame of the study. The source of the data is obtained from Twitter. The data are taken from January 2021 until January 2022. The method of data analysis used in this study is the method of Simak and Agih. Referring to the three methods, I use Sudaryanto's theory for the method. To describe these forms, I use the theory abbreviations word formations by Yule (2010). I found there are five types of abbreviations using Yule's (2010) theory which are commonly used in status, caption, comment, message, and meme on Twitter by American Artists. There are 40 Tweets from 25 artists' accounts, and In this study, there are several forms of Slang Abbreviations, namely: Blending, Multi-process, Initialism, Clipping, and Acronyms. The most dominant form is acronym.
