Abstract

This term paper discusses about Racism Experienced by Martha Cabrera as an Immigrant and Latin American in the Film Knives Out by Rian Johnson. This study is qualitative method by using Roland Barthes’ theory of semiotic about denotation, connotation and myth, semiotic theory from Ferdinand de Saussure about syntagmatic and paradigmatic, and Neubeck’s theory about the form of racism. The purpose of this study is to investigate the reason why Martha Cabrera gets racial treatment, to know how Martha experiences the racial treatment, and to examine the form of racism. This term paper focuses on the meaning or message of racism through the sign that found in the film. The results of this study found that there was an act of racism that was felt by Martha Cabrera in the film Knives Out. The film is not only about the death of a wealthy writer, Harlan Thrombey but also there is an act of racism.
