Abstract

This study aims to determine the classification and function of illocutionary speech acts. and understand the interpretation of dialogue between speakers and listeners by using Sarle's illocutionary classification theory in the utterances of the three main characters in the Aquaman film script, namely Arthur, King Orm and Mera. This research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive analysis method. The writer collects data from the manuscript and then analyzes it based on the given theory. The data were analyzed one by one to determine the classification and function of illocutionary speech acts. Of the forty data, there are five classifications of illocutionary acts used by the main character in the Aquaman film. Declarative, there are two data consisting of Declaring. Representative, there are fourteen data consisting of stating, confirming, informing, and explaining. Expressive, there are six data consisting of expressing anger, expressing sadness, surprise and mocking. directive, there are eleven data consisting of asking, inviting, and ordering. commissive, there are seven data consisting of refusing, and threatening. All kinds of illocutionary speech acts occur in Aquaman. However, the classification of representative illocutionary acts is more dominant in this study
