Abstract
This study is intended to generate an interpretative understanding on the main characters’ characterization. Therefore, a descriptive qualitative method is the most appropriate method used to analyze this novel since she analyzed the data based on the characteristics which are in the form of words, phrases, and sentences and then they were presented descriptively. The results of this study show that characterization is divided into two divisions, namely: characteristic according to direct analysis and indirect analysis. The direct analysis is how the novelist describes the characteristic of the characters from their appearance, speech, action and thought. The indirect analysis is how the novelist describes the characteristic of the characters by authorial interpretation “telling” the reader of the character’s background, motives, values, virtues, and the like. And also through the opinion of other characters.
