Abstract

The aim of this research is to explore the utilization of two primary politeness strategies, namely positive and negative politeness, that uttered by the characters in Pinocchio movie. The approach of this research that used in this research is qualitative approach. This research is conducted by using descriptive qualitative method because the result of the data analysed is in descriptive phenomenon such as utterances, sentence, and language. The result of this research is as follows. First, the most frequently used strategy is positive politeness strategy. In this research, there are (24) utterances of positive politeness strategy. Second, there are (20) utterances of negative politeness strategy found in this research. Third, social distance is dominant factor that influenced the use of the strategies. One of the factors that also influenced the use of positive and negative politeness strategies is the theme of the movie itself, which portrays the warmth of family relationships among the characters.
