Abstract
Many studies regarding the acquisition of “-te iru”, focus on the learner’s language output and there are very few research that focus on textbooks as the input in the language studies. Noda (2001) says, that there is a possibility that introduction of grammatical items in textbooks tend to lead the learners to misuse of “-te iru”. Thus, he argues that there is a necessity to clarify the characteristics of the grammatical items in the basic level textbooks as a language input. Especially, in the study abroad setting, such as in Indonesia, non-textbook sources for the input of Japanese are limited, therefore Indonesian Japanese learners mosty depend on textbooks. This research will discuss about the introduction of “-te iru” in the basic level textbooks from the input viewpoint. The researcher sets 2 research questions: first, what usages of “-te iru” are introduced and in what order is it introduced in the basic level textbooks. Second, what tendency is seen in the usages of “the progressive” and “the resultatives state” based on the features of each textbook. This research examines how “-te iru” is introduced in “Minna no Nihongo Shokyu” and “Situational Functional Japanese”. The data in this research include the main textbook and it’s grammatical explanation, from which “-te iru” sentences are collected and classified based on Kyo (2000)’s “-te iru” usages classification. In order to identify general tendency of “-te iru” in textbooks, “-te ita”, “-te inai” and adnominal are also included as data. Each textbooks recognizes 4 different usages of “-te iru” based on Kyo (2000)’s classification. The usages in “Minna Shokyu” based on the introduction order are, “Progressive usage, - long term”, “Resultative state usage”, “Progressive usage, + long term” and “Repetition usage”. In “SFJ” are “Resultative state usage”, “Quality – state usage, +variability”, “Progressive usage, + long term” and “Progressive usage, - long term”. However, this research finds that there are actually 2 additional usages of “-te iru” in each textbook: In “Minna shokyu” there are “Quality – state usage, + variability” and “history – exprerience usage”. In “SFJ” are “Quality – state usage, + variability” and “Repetition usage”. Furthermore, in “SFJ” there are an introduction and explanation about “-te inai” and “-te ita”. The analysis also shows that the syllabus adopted by each textbook affect how the grammatical items are introduced. If we look at how “-te iru” usages are introduced on each textbook, “Minna shokyu” intruduces “Progressive usage, - long term” earlier than “Resultative state usage”, while “SFJ” introduces “Resultative state usage” earlier than “Progressive usage, - long term” because the setting which need “Resultative state usage” is introduced earlier. Moreover, if we look at the distribution of the examples of “-te iru” in each textbook, in “Minna shokyu”, after the ”-te iru” usages are being introduced, the number of examples tend to decrease. On the other hand, in “SFJ” the examples can still be found, some of which show increase in subsequent chapters. The researcher argues that these differences are affected by the different syllabus.
