Abstract

This thesis analyzed Gottlieb's subtitling strategies in translating the English to Indonesian subtitles of the movie script Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023). The study employs a qualitative descriptive method to explore the application of ten subtitling strategies proposed by Gottlieb. There are a total of 84 data that were analyzed in this thesis, categorized as follows: expansion (7 data), paraphrase (27 data), transfer (10 data), imitation (15 data), dislocation (1 datum), condensation (7 data), deletion (16 data), and resignation (1 datum). The findings reveal that paraphrase is the most frequently used strategy, emphasizing its effectiveness in accommodating both cultural and linguistic differences while maintaining clarity and contextual accuracy. Furthermore, the study identifies challenges in subtitling, such as balancing the shortness of a subtitle with accuracy, adapting to cultural nuances, and ensuring synchrony with what is shown on the screen. The thesis concludes that selecting appropriate subtitling strategies is something that is important to achieving effective translations that enhance audience comprehension and enjoyment. This study contributes to the field of audiovisual translation by offering practical insights into subtitling practices for movie scripts, particularly for diverse linguistic and cultural audiences. These findings can serve as a reference for translators, researchers, and practitioners in improving subtitle quality and accessibility in audiovisual media.
