Abstract

This study discusses the attitude and behavior toward cheating / plagiarism, academic selfconcept, the level of cognitive dissonance, and internal and external justification. The results of questionnaires from a sample of all students from Darma Persada University in the academic year of 2013/2014, show that the majority of students agree that cheating in examinations / tests are morally wrong. However, in practice, the students are permissive in doing this kind of academic dishonesty. Therefore, not surprisingly, the majority (70.1%) of the 315 respondents did not experience dissonance or their dissonance was very minimal. Of the descriptive data there are also known that although the average level of the students’ self-concept turned out to be more than moderate (65.9%) of the scale 100% (very high), it was not enough to affect the magnitude of the dissonance. In addition, the students’ attitudes toward academic dishonesty were low correlated with their behaviors towards the similar issue. This means that although they agree that cheating is wrong, they still do it. Most of the students have their internal justification for an excuse to do the academic dishonesty.
