Abstract
The Best Lies by Sarah Lyu tells about friendship that ended tragically. This novel has dual-timeline to support the plot. The writer used theories and concepts through literary approaches–character and characterization, plot, and setting. Through psychological approaches the writer use obsession, self defense, and toxic relationship theories. To support the topic of the research, the writer also used qualitative method. The nature of the research in the form of analysis using data collection methods in the form of literary text from Sarah Lyu’s novel The Best Lies as the primary source and supported by several references as the second source related to the topic and concept in this research.This research take the side of psychology of literature: obsession, self defense, and toxic relationship that supported by intrinsic approaches: character and characterization, plot, and setting.The result of the research will take the theme “Obsession and Self Defense in a Toxic Relationship of Sarah Lyu’s Novel The Best Lies”
