Abstract
An illocutionary act is doing an action by saying something. There are five types of illocutionary acts, namely; representative, directive, commissive, expressive and declarative. Marriage story is a story about a couple who are in the process of divorcing. The purpose of this study was to determine the types and to find out the function and meaning of illocutionary acts of speech on their characters. This research was conducted using a qualitative method because the data in this study came from utterances containing the types of illocutionary acts and the context of the illocutionary acts of each character. The data of this study were taken from 26 speech samples. From the results of the analysis, it can be said that there are 7 utterances in representative form that can be categorized into stating, reporting and asserting. 8 directive utterances in the form of ordering, asking, ordering, questioning and advising. Commissive appears in 6 utterances in the form of promising, threatening, offering and refusing. then, 4 expressive utterances in the form of thanking, blaming, congratulating and praising, The last type of illocutionary act is declarative, which has one utterance in the form of a declaring.
