Abstract

This study examines the theme of the movie script through intrinsic and extrinsic approach. Through the intrinsic approaches, I analyze the concept of characterization, setting, and plot. Through the extrinsic approaches, it is a psychological approach such as the concept of depression and the death instinct as the main problems of human psychology in this study. The qualitative research method is used in this study. The purposive sampling and documentation data collection methods were used in this study. The data is in the form of literary texts from A Star is Born movie script by Bradley Cooper as the primary source and supported by several literary concepts to connect theories, concepts, and relevant definitions as secondary sources. The result of this research is as follows. Depression is one of the leading causes of the death instinct and leads to suicide in many people. It is found in this research that getting rid of depression in a person takes a very long time and a tough effort. The script of this movie represents the connection between depression and the death instinct. This movie script also represents a struggle of a person who is very difficult to be free from depression and avoid selfdestructive behavior. The conclusion of this study is how we should handle problems in our lives so that they do not turn into severe depression and end up becoming the desire to die or death instinct as a result of our negligence in dealing with depression.
