Abstract
Communicating is a social activity like we do any other special activity. Communication activities can be realized if there are speakers and interlocutors to interact and also exchange information. In a communication, the speaker will convey a certain message conveyed through language and then the other person will try to capture the meaning of the message conveyed by the speaker. So, to create good communication between the speaker and the interlocutor must understand each other the meaning of the message conveyed so that there is no misunderstanding. However, in everyday life, we often encounter someone's misunderstanding in interpreting an utterance because of the indirect meaning conveyed by the speaker and difficult to understand by the interlocutor. This research is qualitative research that uses a pragmatic approach to describe the violations committed by the actors. The purpose of this study is to provide an understanding of the forms and relevance of the flouting of maxims and conversational implicatures in The Hustle film. The results showed that there were 4 floutings of the maxim of quality, 3 floutings of the maxim of quantity, 4 floutings of the maxim of relevance, and 5 floutings of the maxim of manner. Of the 16 available flouting data, most of the flouting maxims of manner were found because they were deliberately flouted to give a funny and hilarious effect to the audience. Flouting of maxims in the principle of cooperation is also one of the causes of conversational implicatures aimed at deceiving, creating funny effects, rejection, and satire.
