Abstract
Doublespeak is communicating in a way that misrepresents or obscures the truth. There are four types of doublespeak Euphemism, Jargon, Gobbledygook and Inflated Language. Euphemism is divided into several categories, they are: metaphor, hyperbole, circumlocution, initialism, acronym, omission, hypernym, understatement, colloquial, jargon and figurative expression. The purpose of this study is to determine what kinds of doublespeak there are in Obama’s speech about the Syrian war, why doublespeak is being used in the speech and how the historical and political context affect the speech. This research was conducted using qualitative method. By obtaining data from the speech, it can be found that there are 20 data that contains doublespeak, within it contains 2 data of doublespeak Euphemism, 4 data of Euphemism Hyperbole, 11 data of Political Jargon, 1 data of dysphemism and 2 data of Military Jargon.
