Abstract

This term paper is about the guilty feeling and fear experienced by Alison's character in the novel The Secret to Happiness by Jessica Redland. How Alison has a dark past and rises to find her happiness. After losing her family, now Alison lives with her boyfriend Dave. Dave is cruel and often bullying Alison until Alison meets Danniella, and they become best friends. They have the same goal of striving to find their happiness. This term paper discusses about the theme of a literary work of novel using the intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The concepts that are applied to analyze through intrinsic approach consist of characterization by using showing and telling methods, plot, and setting. For the extrinsic approaches, the concept the writer uses are guilty feeling and fear. This study is the variety of qualitative research, types of library research, interpretative analysis using the method of data collection in the form of literary texts from the novel The Secret to Happiness by Jessica Redland as a primary source and supported by some of the literatures to relate the theory, concept and the relevant definition as a secondary source. This novel proves to describe how to find happiness from a dark past.
