Abstract

In learning speaking English we need to know what strategies suit for us because strategy is the important thing in teaching and learning process. According to Richard and Rodgers, as cited in Alfian (2018) states that strategy is an overall plan for the proper presentation of language material. A strategy is procedural, but an approach is axiomatic. The strategy and students responds to the strategy that teacher use is two things that related. Students can respond to the teacher strategy differently, the students respond is the thing that teacher can evaluate for their strategies. This study aims to find out about strategies used by teacher in teaching speaking English and also students respond to the teacher strategies in teaching speaking at SMK Pembangunan Nasional. By approaching qualitative method, this study uses observation and questionnaire as the instruments. To analyze the teacher strategies, researcher does observation such as noted all of the teaching and learning activities and uses questionnaire to discover student’s respond to the strategies. The results of this study find that teacher use storytelling and role play as speaking teaching strategies and students responds claimed that the strategies are beneficial for them.
