Abstract

Racial discrimination is still found in a number of real-life cases, in this study the issue of racial discrimination filmed through the film “Hidden Figures”. This phenomenon can be used to analyze extrinsic aspects such as racial discrimination. This study aims to analyse the characterization of the main character, plot and setting, and movie script in the “Hidden Figures” movie script by using the concepts of sociology of literature through Fred L Pincus theory. This study also will elaborate the theme by using the intrinsic and extrinsic approach. This study take place between October 17 , 2021, and July 2022 at Darma Persada University in East Jakarta. This is qualitative research with data obtained from movie scripts evaluation and literature study. The results show that the “Hidden Figures” movie script uses an intrinsic approach that includes characterization, plot and setting, and also through a Fred L Pincus theory. This approach is able to understand the characterization of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson as main characters from this movie script. They are a smart confident, brave, toughness, strong mind and caring character. While the plot is also very supportive of the characterization and setting and this movie script. For the extrinsic approach, Discrimination theory by Fred L Pincus can be used. It was inevitable that the literature case on the racial discrimination in the Hidden Figures' Movie Script. This research will increase knowledge about Fred L Pincus theory about the type of Racial Discrimination and sociology of literature. th
