Abstract

This pragmatics-based research is aimed to observe (1) the relevance of conversational style and preference structure to face want, (2) the impact of conversational style to the face want, and (3) the impact of preference structure to the face want. The writer elaborates the theory of politeness strategy by Brown & Levinson (1987), the theory of conversational style by Deborah Tannen (1980), and transcription conventions by Gail Jefferson (2004) with cases which are taken out from a talk show in the United States: The Ellen Show Season 15 Episode 93. The host of the talk show is a famously brilliant comedian, Ellen DeGeneres, which on February 1, 2018 invites the former First Lady Michelle Obama to her studio after she leaves the White House. The writer begins conducting the research by identifying the characteristics of conversational styles and preference structures employed by both speakers that may generate face-threatening acts in some ways. The result of this research matches to the hypotheses drawn previously that all of those features are interconnected to each other: high-involvement style that consists of more preferred acts is signaling interpersonal involvement; hence the employing of this style lead to the act of violating the need for freedom of the addressee or it can be concluded as the act that threatens negative-face want of the addressee. The Ellen Show Musim 15 Epsiode 93.
