Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyse the characters’ using the showing method characterization through the intrinsic and extrinsic approach. Through intrinsic approach, plot, setting, theme and showing method characterization are used in analysing the data. The theories of selfishness and family conflict are used to analyse the data in extrinsic approach. The approach of this research is using qualitative research. Qualitative approach is used because qualitative method specializes in social or political data gathering, and these data are gathered from the experience of relevant phenomena. The object of this research is the movie script “Lady Bird” by Greta Gerwig. The data of this research are collected from the dialogue and narration in the movie script. The result of the research in intrinsic approach, it can be found the characterization of Lady Bird, Marion, and Larry. The plot found consists of situation, generating circumstances, rising action, climax, and denouement stage. The setting found consists of settings of place, time, and atmosphere are also analysed. The theme of the research is selfishness. The selfishness of the character Lady Bird is caused by her self image desire and egoistic, The family conflict of McPherson Family is caused by the selfishness of Lady Bird, Economic, Larry’s illness, Lady Bird’s rebellion, and Marion’s anger issue. This movie script is representing dynamic of a family who currently have teenager children and they still search for their identity.
