Abstract

In today's world, many stories about veterans managing their stress through various means are featured in a wide range of literature, especially in movie scripts, as they are contemporary text dramas with characters that can be examined using literary psychology. This research focused on analyzing the utilization of extrinsic and intrinsic factors in the 2020 movie script “Da 5 Bloods”. Therefore, the goal demonstrates this movie script is a portrayal of the concept defence mechanism in the movie script of Spike Lee “Da 5 Bloods”. A descriptive qualitative method was employed in this study. Indicating that the data used is in the form of words not numbers. The object of the research used is “Da 5 Bloods (2020)” movie script. In this movie script, Freud's theory of defence mechanisms was used to connect an extrinsic approach with an intrinsic approach in the form of characterization, plot, and setting. This study is also supported by reviewing books, journals, and other research sources from the internet as secondary data references. The results obtained from this study are defence mechanism serves as a means of redirecting emotional stress, anxiety, or internal conflicts. Within the characters Paul and Otis we can see how war veterans often used defence mechanism primarily displacement and aggression within their civilian life and how destructive it can be to themselves and others.
