Abstract

This study aims to enhance readers' awareness of the persistent issues of domestic violence and trauma. The focus is on the novel "Hide and Seek," utilizing intrinsic and extrinsic approaches for a thorough examination of its thematic complexities. Employing a qualitative approach with a descriptive qualitative method, the study employs “simak catat” for data collection and literature analysis for data analysis. Intrinsic analysis dissects plot, characterization, and setting, unraveling the intricate dynamics between Joana and Cynthia within the context of domestic violence and trauma. Extrinsic examination applies domestic violence and trauma theories, shedding light on the pervasive nature of abuse and its enduring consequences. The study exposes domestic violence as a societal issue, encompassing psychological and financial dimensions. Joana's distressing experiences, vividly depicted through psychological and financial abuse by her mother, Cynthia, serve as a stark illustration of the profound and lasting impact of such abuse on an individual's identity and well-being. Delving into the nuanced layers of trauma—impersonal, interpersonal, and attachment—the study reveals how these experiences intricately shape Joana's character. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of domestic violence and trauma, advocating for further exploration in diverse literary contexts and interdisciplinary perspectives to achieve a comprehensive societal comprehension.
