Abstract

This research aims to analyze a novel using specific theories in literary sociology. Theories in literary sociology are analyzed using sociological issues, such as the feminist movement. The subject of this study, The Poppy War novel (2018) by Rebecca F. Kwang, illustrates liberal feminism by telling the story of Fang Runin, a war orphan girl, trying to gain her freedom after being humiliated by her foster family and friends. This research analyzes literary works using intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The intrinsic approach in this study includes characterization, plot, and setting. The extrinsic approach in this research includes the theory of liberal feminism, which is divided into two factors for the birth of the liberal feminism movement: the concept of gender inequality and the concept of freedom. This research uses a qualitative method through literature review and content analysis of the novel. The results of this study consist of the types of gender inequality, namely subordination, stereotypes, violence, and burden, which are seen through characterization, plot, and setting. Then, the concept of freedom is seen in this study through characterization, plot, and setting. Therefore, all the data related to the theory of gender inequality and the theory of freedom it reveals a picture of the liberal feminism movement.
