Abstract

ABSTRACT This research analyzed the main character in the movie script “Nyad” (2022), written by Julia Cox, using intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The study focused on the psychological development of Diana Nyad, a sixty years old woman long-distance swimmer, as she attempts to achieve her lifelong dream of swimming from Cuba to Florida. The intrinsic approach consisted of analyzing characterization, plot, and setting based on Petrie and Boggs theory. Meanwhile, the extrinsic approach consisted Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs to explore Diana’s motivations throughout her journey. This study used a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected through documentation and library research. The result of the analysis shows that Diana successfully fulfills all five levels of Maslow’s hierarchy: physiological needs, safety needs, love and belongingness, esteem, and self-actualization. Diana is portrayed as an ambitious, stubborn, and dominant character. Her journey demonstrates how personal values, ambition, and strong emotional support lead her to overcome limitations and reach her highest potential. This study highlights how movie scripts, especially biographical ones, can reflect apparent psychological and motivational issues through fictionalized storytelling.
