Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine how Moana's heroism changes as she is portrayed in the movie script Moana 2 (2024). Through her journey, this study investigates how Moana develops from a young wanderer into a legendary leader. This study also examines the internal and external changes Moana experiences. The objectives of the study are to discover Moana's characterization, how the plot and setting influence her transformation, and how Joseph Campbell's Monomyth theory is applied in the story. This research uses a qualitative narrative approach. The primary data source was the Moana 2 movie script. Data were collected through reading, note-taking, and categorizing actions or dialogues related to Moana's heroic journey. To better understand the transformation process, the analysis utilized intrinsic elements (characterization, plot, and setting) and extrinsic elements (Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey theory). The research demonstrated that Moana's transformation occurs through three main phases of the Hero's Journey: Departure, Initiation, and Return. Moana is portrayed as a resilient and compassionate character through the "showing method." The perilous ocean setting serves as a catalyst for her mental development, while the storyline demonstrates her transition from simply following her ancestors to forging her own path as a leader. In conclusion, Moana's ability to bridge the past and the future demonstrates her heroism; it demonstrates that true leadership requires sacrifice and shared responsibility. This study confirms that the script successfully portrays the contemporary heroine archetype.
