Abstract

Speech act is using utterances to perform some actions, in any occasions. This study intend to analyze speech act used by one of the main characters in The Happy Prince movie. The analysis contains the investigation of what acts emerge behind the utterances and the impacts for the hearer after the utterances is stated. The purpose of this study is to find out what illocutionary acts are used by Oscar Wilde as one of the main characters in The Happy Prince movie, and to describe the perlocutionary act of illocutionary act used. The main data is movie and subtitle of the movie itself. The form of the data is dialogue. I also take some references such as journal, books, websites to support the main data. The method of the collecting data in this research, I use documentation since the data are collected from movie and subtitle of the movie itself. The data are organized based on types of speech acts, illocutionary and perlocutionary. Then speech acts of each type are analyzed by using John R. Searle’s theory of speech act.
