Abstract
This paper discusses the theme of a novel. Two approaches, intrinsic and extrinsic approaches, are applied to analyze this novel. The concept applied to analyze through intrinsic consists of characterization using method, plot and setting. The concept that is analyzed through the extrinsic approach is the extrinsic approach that is applied is the concept of psychological manipulation from psychological manipulation theory which is showed through the intrinsic elements of Kate Elizabeth Russell's novel My Dark Vanessa. This research is a type of qualitative research, type of library research, interpretive analysis using data collection methods in the form of literary texts from the novel My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell as the main source and supported by several literatures related to theories, concepts and definitions as secondary sources. In this study, the novel My Dark Vanessa becomes the main source and is supported by several relevant theories, concepts, definitions as secondary sources.
