Abstract

Movie is one of the media that can attract adults and children, some of them may contain flouting maxim because the phenomenon happens around us, as misinterpretation between two or more people because of implicit utterance or different culture, sometimes it makes misinterpretation meaning. This term paper discusses about flouting of conversational maxim by main characters in “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” (2019) movie by Joachim Ronning. The research approach used qualitative and content analysis for methods of research. The object of research is transcript “Maleficent: Mistree of Evil” and the utterances of main characters are used as data. The results of the study reveal that all types of maxim are contained in “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” movie. There are 20 data classified as flouting maxim of relevance, 12 data classified as flouting maxim of manner, 8 data classified as flouting maxim of quality, and 4 data classified as flouting maxim of quantity. The most frequent data of flouting maxim in this movie is flouting maxim of relevance and the less appear data is flouting maxim of quantity. In this movie, flouting maxim of relevance happens because the main characters changes the topic, flouting maxim of manner happens because the ambiguities statement, flouting maxim of quality happens because some character lie, and flouting maxim of quantity happens because the main characters give more or less information.
