Abstract

This research has a purpose which is to prove the resentment reflected in the main character, Alicia Berenson, is caused by her childhood trauma. Theories of psychology of literature used to help proving it are childhood trauma concept by Walker and resentment concept by Krech. Methods used in this research is literary study. Firstly, I read The Silent Patient novel as a primary source. Secondly, I research and pick several data related to the topic. I also read several references as additional data about related topic. Next, I apply psychoanalytic theory of childhood trauma and resentment. Finally, I conclude the result of the research. From the analysis, it can be concluded that childhood trauma is really affecting someone’s character in adulthood. It can be seen in Alicia’s life. From the childhood trauma she has been through, such as; her mother’s attempt to suicide with Alicia in a same car and when Alicia hears that her father would rather to have she dies rather than his wife. From these traumas she has a huge feeling of resentment when she is not being loved back while she gives everything for her loved one.
