Abstract
Grice’s maxims is the term in conversation or communication between the speaker and the addressee must have the appropriate context and information received no more or less. According to (Grice, 1975) he defines Grice maxims is make your contribution such as is required, at the stage at which it occurs, by the accepted purpose or direction of the talk exchange in which you are engaged, He proposed four maxims that must be applied to create a good communication: quality, quantity, manner, and relevance. When maxims are not followed or obeyed in a communication, this is called a Flouting Maxim, According to (Thomas, 1995) Flouting Maxim is the speaker does not intend to mislead the hearer but wants the hearer to look for the conversational implicature, that is, the meaning of the utterance not directly stated in the words uttered, when the speaker intentionally fails to observe a maxim the purpose may be to effectively communicate a message. Descriptive qualitative method is selected to analyze the data. The theories that were applied in this study are Grice’s and Grundy’s theory, which concerns about Grice’s Maxim. The writer hopes that this research can help readers to understand more about the flouting of the grice maxims.
