Abstract

Semantics is an attempt to describe and understand the nature of the knowledge about meaning in their language that people have from knowing the language. It consider as a major branch of linguistics devoted to the study of meaning in language. Denotative is an actual meaning to which the word refers, meanwhile connotative meaning is an idea suggested by a word beside to its main meaning. This research focuses on denotative and connotative meaning in movie script using theory of semantics by Leech to support conducting the research. I used qualitative descriptive method by describing the collected utterances. The source of data was taken from “Doctor Sleep” movie script. I collected the data by search the “Doctor Sleep” movie script, reading and understanding the script, and the last step is interpreting the utterances that contain connotative meaning with my own understanding and also interpreting those utterances into its denotative meaning. The connotative meaning found in this film script shows the conflict between the shining people and the evil cult True Knot. I categorize the connotative meaning into three types, there are positive, negative, and neutral. The findings show there are 16 data with neutral connotative meaning, negative meaning with 13 data, and positive meaning with six data. Most of the data I found could not possibly happen in real life, so it could not be translated literally.
