Abstract

This paper will be analyze using intrinsic approach and extrinsic approach. Through the intrinsic approach is applied concept: theme, characterization, setting, and plot. And through an extrinsic approach, consist of Defense Mechanisms theory by Freud are analyzed on main characters. The approach of the research that used in qualitatuve approach. The object of this research is Killing Commendatore novel by Haruki Murakami. This study aims to reveal the Defense Mechanism in The Narrator and Wataru Menshiki characters. The Narrator has a Sublimation, Repression, Suppression, and Avoidance. While Menshiki has Intelectualization, Compartmentalization, and Rationalization. I used Freud's Defense Mechanims theory to analyze this research.
