Abstract

This study aims to analyse several utterances in a movie script using several theories in pragmatics. The theories in pragmatics used to analyse the utterances is context, deixis, and references theories. This research uses qualitative approach. It is conducted by using descriptive qualitative method because the result of analysing the data is ‘what’ question concerning specific occurrences is answered. The research object in this study is Black Widow (2021) movie script by Eric Pearson. The research data are collected from several utterances which are conveyed by several characters in Black Widow (2021) movie script. The results of this research are the types of deixis found in the utterances in Black Widow movie script are person, place, time, social, discourse, and empathy. Next, the types of references found in the utterances are exophoric and endophoric. Then, the deictic words found in the utterances in Black Widow movie script are ‘I’, ‘you’, ‘here’, ‘was’, ‘today’, ‘dad’, ‘that’, ‘that’ in ‘that big adventure’, ‘that’ in ‘that stupid mission’, et cetera. Furthermore, the reference words found in the utterances are ‘Natasha’, ‘that gas, the counteragent’, et cetera. Therefore, all these deictic words are used to point to the reference words, which means that the meaning of the words to convey the characters’ requirements to achieve their goal and make the unspecified events clear is known by looking at the previous words, phrases, sentences, and the whole ideas.
