Abstract

This research aims to analyze hierarchy of human need through the main characters in Jerry Spinelli’s novel “Stargirl” using intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The intrinsic approach used is characterization, plot, and setting. While the extrinsic approach is psychology of literature focused on Abraham Maslow’s theory about hierarchy of human needs that included on physiological needs, safety needs, belongingness needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs. This research applied qualitative descriptive method in revealing the data. The object of this research is novel “Stargirl” by Jerry Spinelli. The results of this research are as follows, the elaboration between characterization and hierarchy of human needs, the elaboration between plot and hierarchy of human needs, and the elaboration between setting and hierarchy of human needs. This Jerry Spinelli’s novel “Stargirl” telling about Leo Borlock, he is a low self-esteem adolescent until he meets “Stargirl” he tends to change himself, this also happened to Stargirl. From five categories above, stating that Leo and Stargirl as the main characters fulfill their needs through Maslow’s theory, it awakens our minds about what actually we need as humankind. This is because Leo had proven hierarchy of human needs until the highest self-actualization refer to Leo need Stargirl in his life, until he loses it then regret it, also Stargirl selfactualization being herself, rather than pretending to be someone else in order to be liked, is what she actually needs.
