Abstract

This study aims to analyze a novel using intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The intrinsic approach used to analyze the data is the theory of characterization, plot, setting, and theme. While the extrinsic approach used to analyze the data is the theory of guilt and anxiety theory. This research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method, because the results of analyzed data are the form of characterization, plot, setting, theme, and concepts of guilt and anxiety. The object of this research is the novel "The Mistake" by K.L. Slater. The data of this research collected from contents of the story in the novel "The Mistake" by K.L. Slater. The results of this study are as follows: This study describes the intrinsic elements, namely the characterization in this novel using the telling and showing method, the elaboration of the plot through five stages, analysis of setting, as well as the presentation of the themes presented in this novel. The extrinsic elements presented in this study are the concepts of guilt and anxiety, and the relationship between the two concepts with the intrinsic elements. The main element in this research is analyzing the guilt and anxiety experienced by the character Rose in the novel "The Mistake" and how her dark past affects her life in the present, which causes psychological problems experienced by her.
