Abstract

This study aims to analyze The Reflection of Anxiety leads to Defense mechanism of Marlo’s Character in Diablo Cody’s Movie Script Tully. Tully is a Film Directed by Jason Reitman and written by Diablo Cody. It is the Story of An unanticipated friendship between a struggling mother and the night nanny her brother hired to help with her newborn child. This research is analyzed using intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. Through the intrinsic approach, characterization, plot, and setting are used to analyze the data. Through the extrinsic approach, Psychoanalysis theory, anxiety, and Defense mechanism Theory by Sigmund Freud are used to analyze the data in extrinsic approach. The object of this research is Marlo’s Anxiety in Tully Movie Script. This research is conducted by a qualitative method. The data of this research are collected from some books, journals, web pages, and electronic sources that related to the theme of discussion, Movie Script, and Tully Movie. The results of this research consist of the characterization, plots, and setting Tully Movie script, then Psychoanalysis theory such as id, ego, superego, and defense mechanism that related to the main problem of Marlo’s Anxiety. Then I elaborate the intrinsic and extrinsic approaches to prove the theme of this research is the reflection of Marlo’s Anxiety. From this research, I found out that anxiety must be treatable before it might be getting worse, it can lead to mental illness. Tully movie brings the value of failure that is a part of one’s character development, especially in mothers in their postpartum period that has an anxiety problem
