Abstract

This article is a study of a case of racism in society that happened to an African-American character named Don Shirley, and his driver and also his friend named Tony Lip who is a white person. The Green Book film by Peter Farrelly tells the story of Don Shirley and Tony Lip's musical tour trip to South America in the 1960s. The black musician, Don Shirley, had to face racism such as discrimination, verbal abuse, physical violence, and intimidation. Meanwhile, Tony Lip, who is a white man, had to drive Don to his concerts. The research method that is used in this research is a qualitative method. The object of this research is the Green Book movie script. The data collected comes from the movie script of Green Book. This research examines the intrinsic and extrinsic elements. Intrinsic elements include characterization, plot, and setting. The extrinsic element studied is the sociology of literature using the theory of Genetic Structuralism from Lucien Goldmann. The results of this study are as follows, the characterization of Don is a closed, poetic, and maintaining dignity person. Meanwhile, Tony is a talkative, responsible, and an emotional person. The time and place setting are in 1962 in the southern United States. The racism faced by Don is discriminatory racism, racism in the form of verbal, physical (non-verbal) violence, and intimidation. This research is intended to give more attention and awareness to the issue of racism which has been around for a long time, even until now.
