Abstract

This study discusses the politeness strategies applied by the three main characters in "The Witches" movie script. This study aims to describe the types of politeness strategies used in the main character's speech and explain some of the impacts of the main character's speech in "The Witches" movie script. I use a qualitative approach in this research. This study uses a descriptive method to analyze the data. The data in this study were obtained from the utterances of the three main characters which contain positive and negative politeness strategies in "The Witches" movie script. The results of this study found 16 utterances of positive politeness strategies and 11 utterances of negative politeness strategies used by the three main characters. Positive politeness shows that the main character pays attention to the interlocutor's condition and wants to be closer and maintain his relationship with the other person as well. Negative politeness suggests that the main character wants to give freedom and create a comfortable situation for the interlocutor by hiding his true intentions. Based on the results of the study, the use of ten positive politeness strategies by the characters makes the interlocutor feeling comfortable and cooperative. And the use of eight negative politeness strategies by the main character has an impact on the interlocutor being able to accept and understand.
