Abstract

Communication is one of the things that are crucial in daily life. The aim of communication is to convey information or messages between speakers and listeners in a certain way. Information can be conveyed implicitly through a conversation, which is known in pragmatics as a conversational implicature. This research aims to classify the types of conversational implicatures in movie scripts and analyze the context behind the use of these types of conversational implicatures in the utterances produced by the characters. The theories used in analyzing utterances are conversational implicature, which has two types: generalized conversational implicature, and particularized conversational implicature. This research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive qualitative method that aims to provide descriptive data analysis results. The object of this study is the movie script "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" (2018), written by Sofia Alvarez. The data for this research is collected through several steps, including watching movies and reading the film script "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" (2018), taking note of utterances in accordance with conversational implicature, and sorting the data in accordance with the type of conversational implicature. The results of this study indicate that there are 42 types of conversational implicatures in the film, which are classified into 20 generalized conversational implicatures and 22 particularized conversational implicatures. Particularized conversational implicature is used more than generalized conversational implicature in this data.
