Abstract

This study investigates illocutionary acts portrayed from the utterances and the personality trait portrayed from the type of illocutionary acts that exist in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019) movie script. There are two main objectives in this study. The first objective is to describe the utterances of the main character that shows the five types of illocutionary acts in the movie script. The second objective is to analyse the reflection of the main character’s personality traits from her utterances that shows in the movie script. This study used qualitative descriptive method because it describes the utterances of the main character that shows the illocutionary acts. The object of this study is Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark movie script. The research data are collected from the dialogue of the main character in movie script. The result of this study proven that the main character shows the five types of illocutionary acts and the five personality model from the main character’s utterances. There are Assertive (15), Directives (18), Commisive (3), Expressive (12), and Declaratives (0). The type of personality model is analysed in the context of the main character's utterances. There are Openness (15), Conscientiousness (4), Extraversion (12), Agreeableness (4), and Neuroticism (13). It can be concluded that the main character in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark movie script shows the five types of illocutionary acts in her utterances and the five personality model from the utterances based on the five types of illocutionary acts.
