Abstract

This term paper discusses about the theme of literary work by applying two approaches; intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. Through intrinsic approaches the concept are: Characterization using telling and showing methods, setting, and plot. For the extrinsic approaches there are the concept of Ambition by Alfred Adler. This term paper explains Nel Abbot’s Ambition wants to reveals the story behind the river in Beckford city she wants to find out about what is actually going on in the river, but her ambitions instead bring her into her own tragedy and this term paper will reveal which ambition that lead her to the tragedy. Keywords : Ambition, Tragedy, Character, Setting, Plot. Skripsi ini membahas tentang tema karya sastra dengan menerapkan dua pendekatan; pendekatan intrinsik dan ekstrinsik. Melalui pendekatan intrinsik konsepnya adalah: Karakterisasi menggunakan cara bercerita dan menunjukkan metode, pengaturan, dan plot. Untuk pendekatan ekstrinsik ada konsep Ambition oleh Alfred Adler. Skripsi ini menjelaskan Ambisi Nel Abbot ingin mengungkap cerita di balik sungai di kota Beckford, ia ingin mencari tahu tentang apa yang sebenarnya terjadi di sungai itu, tetapi ambisinya malah membawanya ke dalam tragedi sendiri dan makalah ini akan mengungkapkan mana ambisi yang menuntunnya ke tragedi itu. Kata Kunci : Ambisi, Tragedi, Karakterisasi, Latar, Alur.
