Abstract

This term paper discusses about the sign in Metropolis Pt. 2 “Scene from a Memory” concept album from Dream Theater. In this analyzes the writer rebutting Mike Portnoy’s statement, a drummer of Dream Theater through the myth that appears in each song. In his official website, Mike Portnoy said it is a story about a person in the modern day, 1999, he finds out that he is in fact the reincarnated soul of this girl that lived in the1920s. The writer has been analyzes 8 from 12 songs using semiotics approaches from Roland Barthes deals with connotation, denotation, and myth. Furthermore, the writer analyzes the myths through the italic lyrics in this term paper. Its conclusion, the writer finds the myths in each song and rebuts Mike Portnoy’s statement about the concept album by using mediumship theories to support this analyzes. Keywords: Dream Theater, lyric songs, semiotics, sign, myth Skripsi ini membahas tentang tanda di dalam lagu Metroplis Pt.2 “Scene from a Memory” album konsep dari Dream Theater. Dalam penulisan skripsi ini, penulis membantah statemen dari Mike Portnoy drummer Dream Theater melalui mitos yang muncul di setiap lagu. Di dalam website resminya, Mike Portnoy mengatakan bahwa album konsep ini menceritakan tentang seseorang yang hidup di tahun 1999 dan menemukan fakta bahwa dia adalah reinkarnasi dari seorang gadis yang dulu pernah hidup di tahun 1920. Penulis menganalisis 8 dari 12 lagu dengan menggunakan teori semiotika dari Roland Barthes yang berhubungan dengan denotasi, konotasi, dan mitos. Selanjutnya, di skripsi ini, penulis menganalisis mitos melalui lirik-lirik yang sudah di garis bawahi. Kesimpulan dalam penulisan skripsi ini adalah. penulis menemukan mitos pada setiap lagu dan membantah statement dari Mike Portnoy di konsep album ini dengan memakai teori mediumship untuk mendukung penelitian ini.
