Abstract
This study aims to analyze the violating and flouting of conversational maxim in a movie script using the cooperative principles theory proposed by Grice and other theories in pragmatics. The supporting pragmatics theories used in this research are the violation and the flouting of the maxims, also the theory of context. This research was conducted using the descriptive qualitative method which emphasizes personal interpretation and comprehension. The object of this research is Free Guy (2021) movie script by Matt Lieberman. The results of this research are all of violation and flouting the four maxims (quality, quantity, relevance, and manner) are found in the movie script. However, the most violated maxim found in the movie script is maxim of manner that is caused by characters not sharing the same general knowledge. Furthermore, the most flouted maxims in the movie script are maxim of quality and manner, these floutings occur the most because of some exaggeration that is done by the characters in order to create humorous situation.
