Abstract
Literature and society interact in a fascinating way, reflecting and influencing the world through storytelling, reflecting ideals, ideologies, problems, and victories, and inspiring introspection and change throughout history. As the result, sociology of literature is now considered a part of literary field. The aim of this research is to examine a novel through the application of both intrinsic and extrinsic methodologies. The object of this study is Delia Owens' novel "Where the Crawdads Sing" (2018). The aspects that are expanded using the intrinsic approach focus on the characterization, plot, and setting. In the meantime, discrimination theory is used in this research for the extrinsic approach. This study applied a descriptive-qualitative research method. Furthermore, Kya's character experiences discrimination in three ways: being exluded, being avoided, and getting biassed treatment. The novel's storyline narrates the story of Kya, who lives in a marsh and experiences discrimination from the townspeople due to her economic situation and social status as the marsh people. The townsfolk determine Kya with prejudice and stereotypes by labelling her as the Marsh Girl. In addition, the social conflict of the story can be solved at the novel’s resolution when people learn how deeply society is shaping and changing the individuals who live in it.
