Abstract

This study analyzes conversational implicatures in the 2024 animated feature Inside Out 2 by analyzing character dialogue using Grice's theory of implicature and the cooperative principle. Conversational implicature refers to suggested notions that are not explicitly articulated but are inferred from contextual understanding. Using a qualitative method, this study investigates specific and general implicatures, drawing data from chosen dialogues in the movie script and its official transcript. The emotional depth of this picture, heightened by characters such as Anxiety, Envy, and Shy, gives an excellent framework for studying indirect communication. This analysis demonstrates that 25 of the 28 data points are specific implicatures, whereas 3 are general implicatures. This distribution emphasizes a heavy dependence on context-sensitive communication. Meaning derives Special implicatures frequently appear in emotionally charged situations, representing internal difficulties and character development, particularly Riley's journey through adolescence. General implicature, while less prevalent, conveys socially shared ideas, improves audience knowledge in a larger context, and is frequently funny. This study indicates that Inside Out 2 successfully demonstrates how animated films may use pragmatic tactics to convey psychological reality and emotional development. Future research is invited to investigate cross-cultural interpretations of implicatures and how these meanings are transferred across languages in dubbed or subtitled formats.
