Abstract

This analysis is discussing a script of Promising Young Woman by Emerald Fennell. The script tells about Cassandra Thomas, a woman who is filled with hatred for men because of the dark period suffered by her best friend, Nina. He wants revenge on the man who raped Nina which caused her to fall into depression and commit suicide. This term of paper focuses on a theme of literary works of this script by using intrinsic and extrinsic approach. Through intrinsic approach, there are the concepts that applies; characterization, plot, and setting. Through extrinsic approach, there are psychology of literature that is classification of emotion hatred by Albertine Minderop. It is using the qualitative research, types of library research, interpretative analysis using method of data collection in the form of script from Promising Young Woman as the primary resource and supported by some of the literatures to relate the theories, concepts, and the relevant definition as a secondary source. After analyzing the movie script of Promising Yong Woman through the intrinsic approach, that consist of characterization by telling and showing, plot, setting, elaborated with the extrinsic analysis by using hatred emotion concept. It can be concluded Cassandra as the main character of Promising Young Woman by Emerald Fennell reflects hatred emotion. The result of intrinsic approach that I elaborate with the extrinsic approach are proves that the theme of this movie script is Hatred Emotion Portrayed by Cassandra Thomas in Emerald Fennell’s Movie Script Entitled Promising Young Woman. After I analyze about hatred emotion caused on Nina's trauma and affect to the main character behavior, I find that the first occurring of her hatred is peaking that when Cassandra Thomas see the video provided by Madison which contains a recording of Nina being raped by Al Monroe is the main reason her hatred occurs in the story. Therefore, the hatred emotion become the factor which lead to Cassandra to take revenge on Al Monroe. Cassandra's hatred also led her to her anger character which is straps perverts in bars every week and takes revenge on Al Monroe by recklessly attending his bachelor party disguised as a striptease dancer in the last chapter of the story. What the main character had is a rough time with her best friend, Nina's trauma that always there from the first time.
