Abstract

This study discusses the novel by Kate Elizabeth Russell, My Dark Vanessa. The novel tells the story of Vanessa, 15 years old student who is involved in a relationship with her teacher, Strane. In the relationship, Strane often manipulates Vanessa using some tactics of psychological manipulation in order to achieve his goals and makes her do whatever he wants, and causes Vanessa traumatized and depressed. This term paper discusses about the theme of literary work of novel using intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The intrinsic approaches are applied is the concept of characterizations, plot and setting. The extrinsic approach that is applied is the psychological manipulation concept; the tactics and the impacts. The result of this research is to prove the reflection of psychological manipulation theory reflected through the intrinsic elements of Kate Elizabeth Russell’s novel My Dark Vanessa. This study is variety of qualitative research, types of library research, interpretative analysis using the method of data collection in the form of the literary texts from the novel My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell as primary source and supported by some of the literatures to relate the theories, concepts and the relevant definitions as a secondary source.
